Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson speak at Vromans

After the bestselling Saga of Seven Suns and 11 Dune novels, Kevin Anderson and Brian Herbert have launched a new science fiction series – The Hell Hole Trilogy. Kevin says “Planet Hellhole is a nasty place!” Would you like to be a colonist on planet Hellhole with its storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, being a dumping ground for undesirables and charlatans but… with an exiled general hell bent on making it livable? Sounds like a whorl wind adventure!

Of course, Mr. Herbert and Mr. Anderson are famous for their incredible Dune novels. From the Official Dune Website:

DUNE is considered one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time, and Frank Herbert left a lasting legacy to fans and family alike. Brian Herbert – Frank Herbert’s son – and coauthor Kevin J. Anderson have continued the series, keeping the original author’s vision alive and bringing the saga to millions of new readers. is a place where fans of all-things Dune can come and immerse themselves in Frank Herbert’s rich, desert tapestry.

On that lovely Tuesday evening, Bill and I jumped in the faithful green Pathfinder and drove to one of our favorite still standing independent book shops, Vroman’s Bookstore, for an enjoyable event with Dune fans, book hunters and of course, a vanilla latte from the delightful coffee shop downstairs!

Kevin and Brian answered many questions before starting the signing. One thing I learned is that Kevin “writes via dictation”… he speaks into a recorder and then someone types it out. I was like… what? Doesn’t being a write-ter imply, you know, write-ting? Hey, whatever it takes! Storytelling comes in many forms. What’s funny is that sometimes he “writes” while hiking, and breathing heavily, so (his own words) the recordings sound sorta like porn. ;)

Many of our friends were there, but Bill got a chance to hang with his buddy Scott Brick for a few minutes. Usually we only see him at Comic Con.

In addition to signing books, Bill had Kevin and Brian each sign a card, any card…
