USC Marching Band at the Festival of Books

Change is good, right?

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books moved from UCLA to USC this year. Why? Oh, heck, I dunno! There was talk about better lay out, parking, handicap access, blah blah blah but the bottom line is we don’t really know. Since Bill and I both work at UCLA, and are just used to the festival being there, we were a little anxious about the location change and how it would affect the way we do things.

Our experience? Well… the parking WAS a little easier to deal with (except that we had to PAY!). We arrived early, of course, and the lot we chose was closer to the book action, so less strain going back and forth for more books. The booth lay out? The specific signing areas seemed overly spread out, like weirdly, but the overall booth layout was fine, and, best part, no extreme up and down hills and stairs like at UCLA. All on one flat level. So much easier to get around, especially for wheels. But the drive in? Not so great. The 110 had “stuff” going on, ugh, and some of the lanes near USC were “coned off” so we had to “do laps” and maneuver back around in order to fine a way into the lot entrance. Not fun. The irony of that was one of the reasons they left UCLA was complaints about local traffic congestion. Also, there was a LOT more security. Makes you go, hum, why so many guards? Are we expecting company? Dude, how safe are we when the sun goes down? So, yeah, UCLA had its pluses!

The sad things… no Ray Bradbury, no James Owen and of course, no Mystery Bookstore this year. :( Sigh. Maybe well get James and Ray next year! But we did get to see James P. Blaylock
